Helmut Pfrommer - According to the legend, almost all the great composers from Bach to Schubert had a special liking for the viola and, if they ever played themselves in an orchestra or string quartet, they preferred to sit down at the viola chair. However, they did not write a single viola sonata, although this genre already existed and was also cultivated by other composers. This peculiarity of music history can hardly be explained, but today the violist has a small number of grateful arrangements at his disposal.
